چکیده

We present a self-organizing tree formation protocol, STFP, for one-to-many reliable multicasts. STFP constructs a minimum spanning tree of receivers over the underlying multicast routing tree. Based on the tree built by STFP, we develop eÆcient one-tomany reliable multicast protocols that use unicast and/or subcast for retransmitting lost packets. We also describe two novel adaptive subcasting techniques that enable multicast applications to control bandwidth/latency trade-o s. These mechanisms choose unicast or subcast repair dynamically according to the loss correlation among the receivers. A simulation study using NS shows that, compared to OTERS, our reliable multicast protocol using unicast retransmission reduces the repair bandwidth to a half, and that another protocol using subcast repair achieves similar recovery latency while spending two thirds of OTERS's repair bandwidth. It is also demonstrated that our adaptive subcasting techniques are e ective in avoiding both the cascaded delay of unicast repair and the bandwidth waste of blind subcast repair.

OTERS: (On-Tree Efficient Recovery using Subcasting): A Reliable Multicast Protocol

This paper presents a reliable multicast protocol (OTERS) that organizes receivers into a fusion tree that matches the multicast delivery tree of the source and uses this tree to fuse NAKs and subcast retransmissions. The protocol requires two extensions to the current Internet network layer, namely multicast route backtracing and subcasting. We argue that these extension are simple, natural an...

A Reliable Subcasting Protocol for Wireless Environments

This paper presents an end-to-end reliable multicast protocol for use in environments with wireless access. It divides a multicast tree into sub-trees where subcasting within these smaller regions is applied using a tree of retransmission servers (RSs). RM2 is receiver oriented [1] in that the transmitter does not need to know its receivers, hence offering better scalability. The Internet Group...

Scaling End-to-End Multicast Transports with a Topologically-Sensitive Group Formation Protocol

While the IP unicast service has proven successful, extending end-to-end adaptation to multicast has been a difficult problem. Unlike the unicast case, multicast protocols must support large and heterogeneous receiver sets. While proposed approaches to scaling multicast transports attempt to localize problems and/or organize receivers into a hierarchy through a divide-and-conquer approach, this...

Reliable WDM Multicast in Optical Burst-Switched Networks

In this paper, we present a reliable WDM (Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) multicast protocol in optical burst-switched (OBS) networks. Since the burst dropping (loss) probability may be potentially high in a heavily loaded OBS backbone network, reliable multicast protocols that have developed for IP networks at the transport (or application) layer may incur heavy overheads such as a large num...

The IP service model retains its simplicity and robustness by deferring reliability and congestion control to higher layers through end-to-end transport protocols. While the IP uni-cast service has proven successful, extending end-to-end adaptation to multicast has been a diicult problem. Unlike the unicast case, multicast protocols must support large and heterogeneous receiver sets. While prop...
